Sony unveils new Blu-ray products

Sony Australia has unveiled two new products to the Australian marketplace to compete in the high definition (HD) home category.

The BDP-S1E will deliver full 1920 x 1080p HD video from Blu-ray Disc titles. The Blu-ray disc player allows users to record films at 24 frames per second.

The player is available now and retails for $1,399. Sony will also be releasing the BDP-S300, with final specs and pricing to be released before the Christmas rush.

Sony Australia marketing director, Carl Rose, said the company expects sales of its Blu-ray range to pick-up with Sony’s PlayStation 3 leading the charge.

“From Sony’s perspective, having a range of high definition products which make up a digital home will be the driving force and pivotal to becoming successful in the local market,” he said.

All products will be available through "high-end retailers", according to Rose.

“We want to make sure these products are sold properly and our strategy is to not go through mass distribution. Dealers have to be capable of explaining the capabilities of the Blu-ray display and imaging products,” he said.

Selected retailers include JB Hi-Fi (which declared its unequivocal support for Blu-ray), Harvey Norman and Retravision. The products will also be available through the Sony-owned store, Sony Central.
