BT unlocks virtual vault

UK telco BT has unveiled an online storage vault for digital valuables, giving customers a place to keep everything from movies, music, emails and address books to photos, documents and presentations. The company is pitching the Digital Vault as protection against PC crashes, theft or accidental deletion.

Customers can access the vault from any computer connected to the Internet, while all personal data is encrypted when transmitted and then stored in a secure data centre.

Although initially designed to keep personal data away from prying eyes, the Digital Vault also allows users to share their data files, by allowing customers to create a photo album slide show in their personal vault.

BT Digital Vault Basic is free and offers 2GB per month storage. If automatic back-up and more storage is required, then customers can choose BT Digital Vault for $12.50 a month and receive 20GB of storage.

The $12.50 a month service provides BT Digital Vault Backup Manager, which allows customers to choose which computer folders they want to back up once and the Backup Manager will then automatically backup the files each time they are changed or more files are added.

Gavin Patterson, managing director of consumer, BT Retail, said: “Millions of us now routinely store our memories, thoughts and valuable content on our PCs. For example, more than half of PC owners now store their photos on their PCs. To lose this information in the event of a ‘crash’ or theft would be devastating. BT Digital Vault offers a, simple and safe solution.”
