Palm hides Treo from European environmental rules

Palm has stopped shipping its Treo 650 smart phone to Europe. The current model doesn’t comply with the "RoHS Directive" that went into effect on 1 July. 

The new environmental regulation limits the amount of hazardous materials such as lead, mercury and cadmium that can be used in electronic devices.

Palm will still be able to sell its existing stock of Treo 650 phones that are already in Europe. The company by the end of this year plans to introduce a new model that complies with the new environmental rules, a company spokesperson told vnunet.com.

The Treo 650 is the only Palm smart phone that's currently available in Europe. The company's 700 model is available to buyers in North America only.

The decision to temporarily shift away focus from the European market raises questions about Palm's dedication to the region. The device maker traditionally has struggled in the European market and this decision can only make it further fall behind.
