Avaya has unveiled its latest unified communications software, which it promises is breakthrough technology designed to improve the performance of collaborative teams.

Avaya promises intelligent communications
The presence-based, real-time software, called 'Intelligent Presence' will aggregate telephony, desktop and application presence information, not just from Avaya's systems, but also those from Microsoft, IBM and other third party sources, said Avaya.

Intelligence Presence will "eliminate barriers to responsiveness, such as location, time of day, type of network, platform channel or device," said Avaya's global communications solutions president Stuart Wells.

The software will bridge standard network protocols like session initiation protocol (SIP), session initiation protocol for instant messaging and presence leveraging extensions (SIMPLE) and extensible messaging and presence protocol (XMPP).

Intelligent Presence will be available in Q2 this year and is to be included in Avaya's Unified Communications Standard Edition, together with support for Avaya one-X clients and endpoints, including one-X Portal, one-X Communicator and one-X Desk phones.

Software clients will provide a single interface from which to view presence status, allowing the user to select the required communication channel. This could include click-to-call or click-to-conference, with video or via an audio only channel.

Avaya said that Intelligent Presence will also integrate with Microsoft Office Communicator in Q2, and later this year with IBM Lotus Sametime and Microsoft Exchange. Avaya said they would also issue a software development kit for Avaya DevConnect members and customers, allowing them integrate systems with Intelligent Presence.
