Secure Computing has announced the launch of a new global initiative - which includes a dedicated website and programs - aimed at educating users about the Payment Card Industry’s (PCI) Data Security Standard (DSS) and its looming June 30 compliance deadline.

Key components of the initiative include, a Webinar, a dedicated website describing the 12 major PCI requirements, best practice advice and an existing range of compliant products.

“In addition to protecting against the onslaught of security threats, organisations today are required to demonstrate compliance with a growing number of industry regulations and standards,” said Ken Rutsky, vice president of product marketing at Secure Computing.

“Secure Computing recognises the challenges facing our customers, and is committed to helping them simplify the process by providing all-in-one security and compliance solutions from one trusted vendor.”

PCI DSS is an international set of policies and procedures surrounding the security of credit, debit and cash card transactions and the protection of cardholders.

The deadline date for the first 6.6 requirement -- which includes installing an application-layer firewall in front of all Web-facing applications -- is to take effect on June 30, 2008, said Secure Computing.

According to Chris Christiansen, vice president of Security Products and Services at IDC, the recent rise in data breaches containing credit card information confirms a security program is no longer optional.

“Companies processing credit card information must embrace and implement solid data protection strategies to ensure the confidentiality and integrity of their customers’ confidential information,” Christiansen said.

PCI DSS was created jointly in 2004 by Visa, MasterCard, Discover and American Express.
