The Federal Government today launched the SMB component of its e-security website, www.staysmartonline.com.au, designed to enhance the protection of small businesses from electronic attacks and fraud.

The initiative is part of the Australian Government’s $13.6 million e-Security National Agenda (ESNA) announced in the 2007-08 budget.

The Stay Smart Online for SMBs’ website provides information on security risks and highlights potential costs of e-security breaches.

The site warns: “Your business computer may hold important business information including your intellectual property; customer and pricing policies; and important financial information such as payroll and banking.

“If it's damaged, lost or stolen this will have serious consequences for your business.”

Furthermore, “Your business records may also contain important information about your customers—names, addresses and financial details.

“Not protecting this information could have an impact on the reputation of your business or the relationship you have with your customers.”

The Minister for Communications, Information Technology and the Arts, Senator Helen Coonan said: “I acknowledge that e-Security can be daunting and difficult to understand, but simple measures can put businesses on the front foot and prevent major and potentially costly e-security breaches later on. “

The site lists the use of anti-virus software, firewalls, email and spam management as some of the key ways to secure online business activities.

In addition, it provides details for 'Smart online behaviours' in all areas including, online banking, safe email usage and staff training.

Senator Coonan has also invited expressions of interests to participate in the 2008 National e-Security Awareness Week.
